We have used the most recent crime statistics from the FBI to create state rankings. Initially there were 7,430 cities in the data set. After filtering out cities with less than 10,000 inhabitants, 2,929 cities remained. We then calculated the violent crime rates and property crime rates by dividing the number of crimes by the population to get the rates per 1000. We also calculated the proportion of law enforcement workers per 1000. These were weighted with – 50% for the violent. crime rate, -25% for property crime rate and +25% for law enforcement rate. The resulting metric gave us the safety index score. The higher this number, the safer the city will be.
